What Is NMT?
A Standardized, Research-Based System
Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is defined as the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system. NMT is based on a neuroscience model of music perception and production, and the influence of music on functional changes in non-musical brain and behavior functions. Treatment techniques are based on scientific knowledge of music's influence on the brain, and are used in rehabilitation and treatment of people who have neurologic conditions such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, Cerebral Palsy, Alzheimer's Disease, Autism, and other neurological diseases affecting cognition, movement and communication.

Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS)™
Uses auditory rhythm as an external timing cue to improve gait, movement initiation, and motor control.
Patterned Sensory Enhancement (PSE)™
Uses musical elements — rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics — to cue and structure functional movement beyond gait.
Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP)™
Uses playing musical instruments to exercise and stimulate functional movement patterns in motor rehabilitation.
Therapeutic Music Playing (TMP)™
Uses structured instrumental music performance as exercise to stimulate and improve functional movement patterns in sensorimotor rehabilitation.
