What is Music Therapy?

Music Is a Unique Tool for the Brain
How It Works
Music engages nearly every area of the brain simultaneously. Our brains crave structure, and the predictability of music (rhythm, steady beat, melody patterns) is a powerful vehicle to help organize our nervous systems.
-
The brain learns by pairing cues with action. When you repeatedly practice movement, speech, or attention tasks using those musical cues, your brain starts to link the cue to the right response more easily.
-
That repeated learning changes the brain over time. This is called NEUROPLASTICITY. According to the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy, "(NMT), neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to reorganize its structure, functions, and connections in response to intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli."
Why NMT Specifically Helps with Neuroplasticity
NMT is set up to address certain brain functions (like walking timing, speaking rhythm, or sequencing). In this setup, a person receives structured, repeatable practice that the brain can use to improve coordination and communication — again and again — so the new connections have a chance to form.
What Music Therapy Can Address
Physical Rehabilitation
Improve motor control, gait, and coordination through rhythmic entrainment.
Speech & Language
Support speech production, fluency, and communication through melodic techniques.
Cognitive Function
Enhance memory, attention, and executive function through musical engagement.
Emotional Wellness
Reduce anxiety, manage stress, and support emotional regulation.
Social Skills
Build communication, turn-taking, and social interaction in group settings.
Pain Management
Use music to reduce perceived pain and support comfort during medical procedures.
